ITR-V PDF password: how to open your income tax acknowledgement
Last updated:
After you file your return, the income tax portal gives you an ITR-V acknowledgement as a password-protected PDF. Here’s how to open it.
The usual password format
Your PAN in lowercase + your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, with no spaces or slashes.
For example, the made-up PAN ABCDE1234F with a date of birth of 5 August 1990 gives abcde1234f05081990.
Companies and firms generally use the date of incorporation in place of a date of birth. This is the format widely published for ITR-V. If the portal shows you different instructions, follow those.
Common mistakes
- Typing the PAN in capitals, the way it appears on the card. It has to be lowercase.
- Leaving out a leading zero: 5 August is 0508, not 58.
- Adding slashes or dashes to the date.
- Using a date that differs from the tax department’s records. If your PAN details have a different date of birth, try that one.
If it still won’t open
Download the acknowledgement again from the income tax portal, as the first copy may be damaged.
How to remove the password from your copy
A lender or your accountant may want a file they can open without knowing your PAN and date of birth. You must know the password first.
- On your own device: open the PDF in Chrome or Edge, enter the password, then use Print and “Save as PDF”.
- With FoxletPDF: use Unlock PDF. The file goes to our server and is deleted after download or within 15 minutes.
Sending several years together? Combine them into one file with Merge PDF. Remove the passwords first.
