How to password-protect a PDF
- Choose your PDF. Pick a file with the button above or drag it onto the box.
- Set a password. Type it twice so a typo can't lock you out.
- Choose permissions. Allow or block printing, copying text and editing.
- Protect and download. Select “Protect PDF”, then download the locked file.
Tips for strong protection
- Use a long password. A phrase of several words is much harder to guess than a short word with symbols.
- Save the password somewhere safe. FoxletPDF can't recover it. Without the password the file can't be opened.
- Permissions are a request. Most PDF apps respect print and copy restrictions, but they can't stop someone who has the password from taking a screenshot.
- Private documents. This tool runs on FoxletPDF's server. Files are deleted right after you download the result. For tools that never upload anything, look for ones without the “Uses FoxletPDF server” label.
How your file is handled
This tool needs more than a browser can do, so your file is sent over an encrypted connection to FoxletPDF’s own server. It’s processed with open-source software, kept only in temporary memory, and deleted as soon as you download the result — or after 15 minutes if you don’t. File names and contents are never logged, and no outside AI or conversion service sees your file. See our privacy policy for details.
Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded?
Yes. This tool needs FoxletPDF's server, so your file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed, and deleted as soon as you download the result — or after 15 minutes if you don't. We never keep copies or look at the contents.
How strong is the encryption?
FoxletPDF uses AES-256, the strongest encryption the PDF standard supports.
Is my password stored or logged?
No. It's used once to encrypt the file and is never written to logs or kept.
Can I remove the password later?
Yes, with Unlock PDF, as long as you know the password.
Will it work in every PDF reader?
AES-256 is supported by all current readers, including Adobe Acrobat, browsers and phone apps.
