How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF. Pick a file with the button above or drag it onto the box.
  2. Pick a position and style. Choose a corner or the centre, top or bottom, and a format such as “3” or “Page 3 of 10”. The preview shows how it will look.
  3. Set the first number. Start at 1, or continue from another document. Tick the cover option to leave the first page unnumbered.
  4. Add and download. Select “Add page numbers”, then save your numbered PDF.

Tips for page numbering

  • Joining chapters? Merge them first, then number the whole document so the numbers run on.
  • Continuing a series? Set the first number to carry on from the previous file, for example 41.
  • Sideways pages are handled. Numbers are placed upright on landscape and rotated pages.
  • Need to re-number? Start again from your original file; numbers added here can't be removed later.

Your files stay on your device

Like every FoxletPDF tool, this one runs inside your browser. Your file is read from your device, processed with open-source PDF libraries (pdf-lib and PDF.js), and handed straight back to you as a download. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored. See our privacy policy for details.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to add page numbers?

No. Numbers are added by your browser, so your PDF never leaves your device.

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. Tick “Don't number the first page”. Numbering starts on page 2, beginning with your chosen first number.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Enter any whole number from 0 to 99999 as the first number.

Will the numbers cover my content?

Numbers sit in the page margin. If your document has very small margins, try a smaller size or the other edge of the page.

Does it work on landscape or rotated pages?

Yes. FoxletPDF places each number the right way up on every page, whatever its orientation.
