How to convert to PDF/A

  1. Choose your file. Pick a PDF or Office file with the button above or drag it onto the box.
  2. Pick a version. PDF/A-2b suits most requirements. Choose 1b only if a portal asks for it.
  3. Convert. Select “Convert to PDF/A”.
  4. Download. Save the file. If FoxletPDF had to turn pages into images, it tells you why.

Tips for PDF/A

  • Fonts must be embedded. PDF/A needs every font inside the file. If a PDF lacks them, FoxletPDF turns pages into images instead so the file still conforms.
  • Office files convert natively. Word, Excel and PowerPoint files are exported straight to PDF/A, keeping text selectable.
  • Need certified conformance? Check the result with a validator such as veraPDF before submitting it somewhere official.
  • Private documents. This tool runs on FoxletPDF's server. Files are deleted right after you download the result. For tools that never upload anything, look for ones without the “Uses FoxletPDF server” label.

How your file is handled

This tool needs more than a browser can do, so your file is sent over an encrypted connection to FoxletPDF’s own server. It’s processed with open-source software, kept only in temporary memory, and deleted as soon as you download the result — or after 15 minutes if you don’t. File names and contents are never logged, and no outside AI or conversion service sees your file. See our privacy policy for details.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded?

Yes. This tool needs FoxletPDF's server, so your file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed, and deleted as soon as you download the result — or after 15 minutes if you don't. We never keep copies or look at the contents.

What's the difference between 1b, 2b and 3b?

1b is the oldest and most restrictive. 2b allows modern features such as transparency. 3b also allows attached files.

Why were my pages turned into images?

The PDF used something PDF/A doesn't allow (for example missing fonts or CMYK colour), and images were the only way to make a valid file.

Is there a size limit?

Files up to 50 MB.
